Blackwork vs Fine Line Tattoos: Which Fits Your Idea?

A practical comparison of two tattoo directions offered by Lalu Tattoo Studio in Kuta Lombok.

FINE LINE

Blackwork and fine line are both broad categories. One relies on strong black shapes and contrast; the other often uses delicate marks and open space. Neither label tells us enough to quote your idea on its own, but the difference can help you choose references.

How should the tattoo look from a distance?

Blackwork often reads through its silhouette and areas of solid ink. Fine line can feel lighter and reveal more detail when viewed close up. If your design needs a bold shape on a large area, start with blackwork references. If you want a restrained floral or subtle lettering piece, fine line may suit the idea.

Size and placement

A design that looks beautiful on a phone screen may need adjustment for the skin. Fine detail needs enough space, while solid black areas affect the visual weight of a piece. Tell us where it will go and whether it must sit beside existing tattoos.

Time and price

Our starting prices are based on the project, not simply the style name: small pieces up to 5 cm start from IDR 700,000 and medium 5–15 cm tattoos start from IDR 1,200,000. Detail, fill, drawing time and scale change the final quote. Larger pieces are discussed individually.

Choose the design first

Collect references from both styles if you are unsure, and explain what you like about each. MG and the studio can discuss which approach works for the motif and placement. Explore the Fine line and Blackwork style pages and our portfolio, then send your idea through the homepage booking form.
